1. What the structure actually is
DIP stands for Double Inspection Port — a combined dual-opening manhole assembly. SMC means Sheet Moulding Compound, a high-strength fibre-reinforced thermosetting composite.
A conventional manhole cover is a single solid slab. A DIP cover is a main cover with a small inspection port built into it:
- The outer main cover carries full vehicular load, to heavy-duty ratings such as EN124 D400 / E600.
- Embedded in the main cover is a compact, independent inspection port that opens and seals separately.
- Both the main cover and the small port use double sealing, double protection and independent locking.
In practice: for routine inspection and sampling you open only the small port, without lifting the heavy main cover.
2. Why projects require the double-port design
One-piece covers create three recurring problems on specialised sites.
High maintenance overhead. Heavy-duty covers are bulky. Level readings, oil-gas testing and sensor maintenance need special tools and several workers every time.
Repeated lifting damages the pavement. Frequently removing a large cover loosens the frame and leads to cracking, settlement and water seepage.
Elevated safety risk — critical for fuel stations and tank farms. Tank chambers and anti-leakage observation wells contain volatile oil and gas. Opening the full cover can cause vapour escape, ingress of dust and rainwater, and increased safety risk.
The double-port design addresses all three: daily maintenance happens through the small port while the main cover stays closed and locked for long-term service.
3. Where DIP covers are specified
This design is commonly written into international tender specifications for high-spec environments.
- Fuel and service station projects — our most frequent application. Used for tank zones, containment basins, oil-water observation wells and settlement monitoring wells. Most overseas station tenders specify double inspection port covers as standard.
- Auxiliary wells for fuel and chemical storage tanks — sites needing periodic level measurement, sealed sampling and equipment inspection.
- Municipal sealed sewage and anti-leakage monitoring wells — environmental monitoring points that must stay sealed and avoid full cover opening.
- Explosion-proof and anti-seepage industrial parks — functional wells requiring waterproofing, dust resistance, odour containment and sustained sealing.
4. DIP cover vs ordinary manhole cover
| Ordinary cover | DIP double-port cover | |
|---|---|---|
| Function | Coverage and load bearing only | Heavy load capacity plus built-in routine inspection |
| Sealing | Single seal, broken on every inspection | Separate dual seal; main cover stays closed |
| Routine access | Lift the full cover, multiple workers | Open the small port only |
| Best suited to | General traffic and access points | Permanently sealed service conditions |
The separate dual-seal construction greatly reduces penetration by rainwater, dust and hydrocarbon vapours, making it stable for permanently sealed service conditions. The double-port design cuts manual maintenance costs by over 70% — a major advantage valued by international asset owners.
5. What we supply
All our dual-port access covers are manufactured from 100% pure SMC sheet moulding compound — not hand-layup GRP, not BMC, not cast iron. This high-pressure compression moulding process delivers consistent density and stable mechanical performance, fully meeting strict international tender standards.
We are the first manufacturer in China to independently design and launch the 900mm DIP double inspection port SMC manhole cover. Over the past 8 years we have continuously optimised its structure, sealing performance, load stability and anti-ageing formulation. After years of iterative upgrading, our 900mm DIP double-port cover has achieved extremely stable performance, a mature structure and reliable quality.
As a gold-level qualified supplier to PetroChina (CNPC) and Sinopec, we have supplied 900mm SMC double inspection port covers for petrol station and tank farm projects in China and for export over many years.
Our 900mm composite covers have been applied in projects for Indian Oil, Shell, ADNOC, BP, TotalEnergies and Petronas, supplied through the engineering contractors delivering those sites, with consistent feedback from contractors and end clients.
We own complete in-house production and testing systems that most factories cannot match:
- SMC sheet production lines, for raw material purity and batch consistency
- 1500-tonne and 2000-tonne hydraulic compression presses for high-density integral moulding
- Load-bearing test equipment for full-load verification
- Waterproof and sealing performance test equipment
6. When to specify a DIP cover
Choose the double-port solution if your project meets any of the following:
- Frequent inspection, sampling or data collection
- Sealed oil, gas or chemical well chambers
- A tender specification calling for it on station forecourts or tank farms
- A requirement for superior sealing with low maintenance frequency
Full-process self-production and strict standardised testing let us deliver more stable quality, higher safety performance and longer service life for high-standard global industrial projects.
The SMC DIP double inspection port manhole cover is a niche, high-value, low-competition engineering product, widely adopted in international bidding and high-standard industrial projects. If you are working on overseas tendering, project enquiries or asset renewal, our custom SMC double inspection port covers meet international standards.
