SMC Composite Covers —
Not Cast Iron, Concrete or Metal

Every week we receive enquiries for cast iron, concrete, stainless steel or plastic manhole covers. We make none of those. Our covers are manufactured from SMC (Sheet Molding Compound) — a glass-fibre reinforced thermoset composite. If your project needs a traditional metal or concrete cover, we are not the right supplier. If you need a non-metallic, corrosion-resistant, high-load composite cover, here is exactly what SMC is and why it outperforms the alternatives.

What It Is
What Is SMC Composite?

SMC stands for Sheet Molding Compound. It is made by combining glass fibre, unsaturated polyester resin and mineral fillers, then moulding them together under high temperature and high pressure into a single, dense, load-bearing piece.

It is a thermoset composite — a fundamentally different category from the materials buyers usually search for. Unlike ordinary plastic, once SMC is cured it will not soften or melt when heated. It delivers far higher strength, anti-ageing performance and load-bearing capacity than common plastic products, without any metal content.

The Difference
What Our Covers Are NOT

Our covers are non-metallic composite. Here is how SMC compares to the four materials buyers most often confuse it with.

✕ NOT Cast Iron
Cast iron is a metal. It rusts and corrodes, is heavy, gets stolen for scrap value, and creates loud banging noise under traffic.
SMC: contains zero metal — it never rusts, has no scrap value (so no theft incentive), and rides quietly under vehicles.
✕ NOT Concrete / Cement
Concrete covers are brittle, crack easily, and are extremely heavy to handle and install.
SMC: impact-resistant and only about one third of the weight — one person can handle installation.
✕ NOT Stainless Steel
Stainless steel is still a metal. In coastal salt spray or chemical environments it can still pit and corrode, and it is expensive.
SMC: resists acid, alkali and salt fog — a strong choice for coastal, chemical and utility applications.
✕ NOT Ordinary Plastic
Regular plastic (PP, ABS, etc.) has low load capacity and becomes brittle after sun exposure.
SMC: thermoset, not thermoplastic — it will not soften or melt under heat, resists UV, and supports heavy vehicle loads.
Why It Wins
Key Advantages of SMC Covers
01
Non-Metallic & Corrosion-Proof
No rust — safe in coastal, chemical and sewage environments.
02
Lightweight, High Strength
Fast, easy installation with fewer workers — about 1/3 the weight of iron or concrete.
03
Electrically Insulating
Non-conductive — safe for utility and power manholes.
04
Anti-Theft & Noise-Free
No metal scrap value, and no clattering when vehicles pass over.
05
UV & Weather Resistant
Built for long-term outdoor service without degradation.
06
Customisable
Colour options and anti-slip surface patterns available.
A Quick Note for Buyers
Right Supplier or Not?

If you are looking for cast iron, concrete, stainless steel or any metal manhole covers, please skip our product range — we do not make those. If you need non-metallic, corrosion-resistant, high-load composite covers, you are in the right place. Send us your specification, load class (e.g. EN124 B125 / D400) and dimensions, and we will recommend the right solution.

Common Questions
Material FAQ
Are your manhole covers cast iron?
No. Our covers contain zero cast iron. Cast iron is metallic, prone to rust and theft. Our products are non-metallic composite.
Are they concrete / cement manhole covers?
No. Concrete covers are heavy and brittle. Our SMC composite is lightweight and impact-resistant.
Are they stainless steel or any metal type?
No. There is no stainless steel or any metal component in the cover body. It is fully non-metallic.
Are they ordinary plastic covers?
No. It is not thermoplastic. SMC is thermoset glass-fibre reinforced composite. It will not soften or melt under heat, and supports heavy load up to D400.
